A Pair of English or American Mahogany "Thebes" Stools, early 20th c. after the antique, the original model in the Collection of the British Museum and copied by Liberty, height 13.5in., width 14 in., depth 11.5in. E1000-1500 Note: A ceremonial stool of this form was discovered in the tomb of Tutankhamen and is currently conserved by the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. This ancient stool served as a model for cabinetmakers of fashion in the late 19th c. A nearly identical mahogany "Thebes Stool" attributed to Liberty & Co. is in the Collection of the Nordenfjeldske Art and Industrial Museum in Trondheim, Norway.
