Description:

A Pair of George IV Polychrome Paint Decorated Papier-Mâché Vases, early 19th c., Jennens and Bettridge, Birmingham, stamped, each of baluster form with flowers, birds and butterflies, vase height 20 in., now mounted as lamps on turned wood bases.
Note: These vases were constructed by a technique of layering papier-mâché over a core form, cutting the layer around the core in half to remove the core and then adding the final layers to complete the vase. Similar vases are discussed in G. Bernard Hughes, Collecting Antiques, 1951, p. 332, fig. 2.
