Lot 134
Description:
A Pair of Rare American Modern Gothic Carved and Burl Walnut Pedestals, c. 1880, attributed to Daniel Pabst, Philadelphia, each with a circular top on a rotating mechanism, rosette-incised and lobed frieze, over anthemion pendants, columnar supports with vine motif flanking foliate panels, blocked plinth, height 27 in., diameter 21 1/2 in.
- Notes: Note: The geometric floral decoration on these pedestals, using lighter burled veneers cut through to a darker contrasting ground, is typical of Pabst's later body of work, and shows the influence of English designer Christopher Dresser, who lectured in Philadelphia in conjunction with the 1876 Centennial Exhibition, an event clearly influential to this Philadelphia cabinetmaker. Reference: Other pieces from Pabst's Modern Gothic output related to these pedestals are a c. 1885 cabinet from the Wurtz House Collection illustrated in Hanks.
