A Pair of 'Sevres' Porcelain Gilt Bronze-Mounted Covered Vases in the First Empire Taste, c. 1875-1890, each painted by Henri Desprez and signed 'H. Desprez', domical lid with finial over a baluster-form vase with Bleu du Roi ground and gilt imperial decoration, the body of each painted with a continuous scene of Napoleon at Austerlitz ( after Francois Gerard), gilt bronze eagle handles and square plinth, lids bearing overglaze red 'M. Imp le de Sevres' mark, height 26.5 in , width 8 in., depth 7 in. E8000-12000 Note: The model for the decoration of these vases is Francois Gerard (1770-1837) 'Battle of Austerlitz, December 2, 1805' conserved by the Versailles Musee Chateau. Commissioned for the ceiling of the Conseil d'Etat to commemorate Napoleon's most famous battle, the scene depicts General Rapp presenting standards taken from the enemy to Bonaparte who is mounted on a white horse. The canvas debuted in the Paris Salon of 1810.
