- Notes: Note: Harper's Ferry, situated at the intersection of Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland, is perhaps best known for its important role as a catalyst for the Civil War, and later as a Civil War battle site. This particular view from the Blue Ridge is depicted from Maryland, facing west toward the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. In 1799, the site was chosen as the new location of the United States Armory and Arsenal. The small industrial town thrived until the October 16, 1859 raid by fervent Abolitionist John Brown. During this raid Brown led 22 men, including freed and fugitive African-American slaves, to capture the Armory in hopes of garnering supplies to lead an anti-slavery rebellion in the South. A contingent from the U.S. Army, led by Colonel Robert E. Lee, recaptured the Armory and John Brown was convicted of treason and hanged. Highly important both geographically and as one of only two U.S. Armories at the time, Harper's Ferry changed hands between Union and Confederate Troops many times throughout the Civil War. Interestingly, during the Battle of Harper's Ferry in 1862, Robert E. Lee returned as a Confederate General, eventually capturing the site on his way to the Battle of Antietam.
