A Rare American Aesthetic Mahogany and Cherry Library Desk, late 19th c., old inset baize surface on top; one side with two banks of drawers flanking a kneehole; the opposite with center bookshelf flanked by brass mounted cabinet doors; each end with deep cased drawer, distinctively carved masques, rosettes within ropework, Medieval hatch carving; the whole on plinth molded base, casters, locks marked Yale Patent. 1878, height 30 « in., width 69 in., depth 48 in. E3000-5000 Note: The scale, high-style, and fine execution of lot 388 is indicative of furnishing for the grand houses of America's Gilded Age industrial barons. A desk of similar type was installed in library of J. Pierpont Morgan's house at 219 Madison Avenue, New York.
