A Rare American Carved and Burl Walnut Cabinet Desk, late 19th c., Moore Combination Desk Co., Indianapolis, labeled, "Patented...1878", leather inset slant top with molded gallery rail over two paneled doors enclosing compartments and drawers, hinged paneled back enclosing pigeon holes, compartments, cardboard drawers and leather inset sliding writing surface, molded plinth base, height 48 in., width 49 in., depth 43 in Note: Joseph A. Moore was William Wooten's general manager in 1876. In 1878 Moore took out a patent for a "Cabinet desk of two wings", by 1879 he had filed Articles of Association for the Moore Combination Desk Company and by 1882 he held two other desk patents which were related to Wooten's desk. An 1883 account of Moore's company notes that its ingenuity in the construction of desks sought "economy of space, convenience of arrangement,...orderly classification of the books, papers, [etc.]..."
