A Rare American Carved, Painted, Gilt and Ormolu-Mounted Dresser in the Louis XV Taste, c. 1870-80, from a 7 piece suite, with the incised stamp "Herter Bros." on the verso of the case and beneath the onyx top, written in script "Mr. English Bureau 7197", interior of drawer #2 of desk also in script "English", one sidechair branded with "#2333" underside of seat rail, height 77 in., width 51 in., depth 23 in. E1500/2500 Provenance: This seven piece set was commissioned by the family of James Edward English, Governor of Connecticut, U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator and leading citizen of New Haven, CT, in politics, business and civic affairs. Rare among labeled Herter furniture in its adherence to its Louis XV antecedents, following the historical design sources in the late 19th century, the Herter firm's suite is most elegant interpretation of the coming style of historicism. Each of the seven pieces with ivory painted ground and having gilt accents and each with different unique floral sprays in polychrome paint, gilded brass pulls, escutcheons and mounts.
