A Rare American Reform Movement Oak Corner Bookcase, c. 1875, the cornice fronted by spherules, the end pediments raised upon charming owl figures supported by engaged pilasters; the ten glazed doors over cabinet doors containing parquetry centered by raised and notched diamonds, the plinth containing drawers, fitted shelves, height 75. 5in., width 142in., depth 89in. E6000-8000 Provenance: A family history indicates this bookcase came from the headquarters of the "Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform". Many prominent early feminists were amongst the membership. Included with lot 289 are two political campaign matchbooks gleaned from several hundred packs of matches found in the base of the bookcase: the covers printed "For Prosperity STRIKE Out The Eighteenth Amendment" verso "Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform, Pennsylvania Division 1700 Walnut Street, Phil. Phone, PEN. 1901-02".
