Lot 392
A Rare American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood Étagère Cabinet, c. 1850, New York, attributed to John Henry Belter, pierced gallery and bracket supports, mirrored back over a long frieze drawer and two cupboard doors, shaped apron, scrolled feet, height 73 in., width 46 1/2 in., depth 20 1/2 in.
PLEASE NOTE: The use of seven-layer lamination to create the extensively carved grape and vine panels on this étagère is indicative of John Henry Belter. A firescreen from the Manney collection and an étagère from the Service collection, both attributed to Belter, exhibit similar finely carved and laminated panels. The drawer interior on this lot is well fitted, similar to the drawer interiors in a dressing chest bearing the stencil of Springmeyer Bros. (Belter's heir) sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 628, October 4, 2003. Reference: Schwartz, Stanek, True. John Henry Belter and The Rococo Revival. p. 59, fig. 31; Dubrow.
