A Rare American Rococo Carved Rosewood-Grained Walnut Tête-à-Tête, c. 1850, attributed to Charles White, Philadelphia, each chair crested by a strapwork cartouche centered by a cabochon flanked by roses, oval backs, padded arms with dolphin head supports, circular seats with swivel base, central ottoman issuing a table, serpentine plinth, modified trumpet legs, casters, en suite with a tripodal table base, overall width 88 in., depth 18 in.; table height 18 in.
- Provenance: Provenance: Acquired from a descendant of Robert Mc Candlish Jones, CSA, First Virginia Regiment, a veteran of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg along with his father-in-law, John Dooley. Mary Dooley Jones, wife of Captain Jones, was active in the Equal Sufferage League of Virginia. According to family history, this tete-a-tete was brought to Virginia from New Orleans in the 1850's.~ Note: A nearly identical example, attributed to the workshop of Charles White, Philadelphia is part of the furnishings at Melrose, Natchez, Mississippi and appeared as a "Revolving Sofa" on the 1865 inventory of the house (catalogue number NATC 10). A nearly identical tête-à-tête was sold in these rooms as lot 552, May 1992
