A Rare and Important American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood Settee, mid-19th c., New York, related to the examples commonly referred to as "Bird Pattern", reticulated crest carved with fruit, grape vines, mythical figures, acanthine scrolls and blossoms, continuous padded arms, floral-carved and molded serpentine seat, cabriole legs, casters, height 44 1/2 in., width 83 1/2 in., depth 34 in.
- Notes: Note: The heavy reticulation of the crest rail, the form of the central crest, the use of sophisticated seven-layer laminated construction and dramatic modeling, the construction of the rear legs, and the molded form of the arm support, seat rail and front legs are similar to elements in known "Bird Pattern" examples of seat furniture made in New York City in the middle of the 19th c. Interestingly, this sofa incorporates opposing sea creatures into the scrolls of the crest rail instead of bird figures. Reference: Known "Bird Pattern" examples include an arm chair illustrated in Dubrow, American Furniture of the 19th c., p. 95 and a parlor suite sold in these rooms as lot 274 October 6, 2007.
