Description:

A Rare English Abolitionist Grey Stoneware Pitcher, c. 1858, with molded scenes from Uncle Tom's Cabin depicting a slave auction and Eliza and her child pursued by Haley; hinged pewter lid, pod finial, the handle a shackled slave figure, base with impressed mark "by E. Ridgway and Abington, Hanley, January 1, 18[??]" height 8 1/4 in., width 6 3/4 in.

  • Notes: Note: The "E. Ridgway and Abington, Hanley" stamp on the Staffordshire pitcher belongs to Leonard James Abington (1785-1867) and Edward John Ridgway (1814-1896) who were partners in Hanley, England. The pitcher illustrates scenes from Harriet Beecher Stowe's politically charged novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. During the mid-19th century, English writers and artists began to concern themselves with anti-slavery campaigns both abroad in the U.S and in their own territories. These works greatly influenced the rallying of popular support for the end of slavery in the Western world.
