Description:

A Rare Federal Carved Mahogany Extension Dining Table, c. 1815, New York, the d-end top with molded edge, a conforming skirt with ebony and brass molding opening to accept four leaves, turned and spiral reeded legs ending in brass cuffs and casters, original surface, height 28 3/4 in., width 53 1/2 in., length 50 in., extended length 118 in. E25000-35000 Note: An innovative design of leaf extensions related to those used here was patented in England by the prestigious Gillows firm of Lancaster and London in 1800. The convenient aspects of the technique were likely to be appealing to the newly wealthy industrial families of New York and were executed by high style local furniture makers. The figured mahogany, brass and ebony inlay and the finely reeded legs on this lot bespeak a New York cabinet maker of very high repute such as Duncan Phyfe or Charles Honore Lannuier. A pier table with analogous brass inlay attributed to Lannuier is illustrated in Peter M. Kenny, Honore Lannuier, Cabinet Maker From Paris p. 163, fig. 92. The cabinetmaker's section of the 1805-1806 New York City Directory prefaces the New York manufacture as, ".this curious and useful mechanical art is brought to a very great perfection in this city. The furniture daily offered for sale equals in point of elegance those of importance from Europe and scarcely equaled in any other city in America." Reference: Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin, April 1967, p. 286. A Gillows accordion extension table from 1813 made for Broughton Hall, Yorkshire of similar form to that above is illustrated in Margaret Jourdain, Regency Furniture, p. 65, fig. 130.
