Description:

A Rare Louisiana Inlaid Plum Pudding Mahogany Armoire, late 18th c., having a dentil molded cornice, narrow frieze, flush panel doors with light and dark stringing, the corners with fan-shaped inlays of oak leaves and acorns, scalloped apron and returns, cabriole legs, height 85 in., width 47 1/2 in., depth 19 1/2 in.

  • Notes: Note: This armoire indicates a confluence of both Georgian and Louis XV cabinet making traditions; the dentil-molded cornice and fan inlays juxtaposing fixed case construction, fiche hinges and cabriole legs typical of those in a well-known group of Louisiana furniture. The inlays and tapering cabriole legs of lot 301 are similar to those on the inlaid mahogany armoire from the collection of George Crozat sold as lot 368 at Houmas House by Neal Auction Company on May 17, 2003 The use of "Spanish Cedar," an imported secondary wood, in the construction of this armoire is indicative of an urban cabinetmaker. Reference: Dr. Crozat's armoire is also illustrated in Poesch. Early Furniture of Louisiana 1750-1830, p. 61, pl. 43
