Description:

A Rare Newcomb College Art Pottery Satin Glaze Vase, 1930, decorated by Anna Frances Simpson with pelicans and moss-laden cypress trees, dark blue and green underglaze, base marked with Newcomb cipher, decorator's mark, Jonathan Hunt's potter's mark, reg. no. SG11, and shape no. 80, height 7 3/8 in. E15000-20000 Illustrated: Jessie Poesch with Sally Main, Newcomb Pottery and Crafts, (Schiffer, 2003), fig. 5-50, p. 211. Note: Although the pelican was not declared the official state bird of Louisiana until 1958 (the brown pelican was specified in a 1966 amendment), its use in state seals dates back to the early 19th century. By 1902, the pelican was a prominent feature of the official seal, and ten years later was used on the state flag. Although the bird was almost annihilated in Louisiana in the 1960's due to pesticides, its numbers were profuse along the Gulf Coast and Lake Pontchartrain when this Newcomb piece was executed in 1930.
