Lot 227
A Rare Pair of American Late Federal Mahogany Bowfront Chests, Philadelphia, c. 1810-1825, each projecting top above a reeded frieze contained by concentric bosses, the four graduated drawers retaining original brass hardware cast with neptune masks, the sides with corresponding reeding, on turned feet, height 40.25in., width 42.5in., 23.75in. E6000/8000 Note: The development of this chest design stems from Sheraton's Drawing Book, which became the basis of the Journeymen's Philadelphia book of Prices, c. 1795. The use of reeding around the drawers interrupted by concentric bosses is unique to the Philadelphia area family of cabinetmakers in the early part of the 19th century. A Philadelphia Museum of Art Bulletin, published in the Spring of 1953 illustrates a very similar chest in plate No. 9, page 46, with an attribution to Henry Connelly, the most prolific cabinetmaker of Sheraton based designs in Philadelphia, rivaled only by comparison with Ephrain Haines. These pair of chests are remarkable in that they each retain a full set of cast brass drawer pulls featuring the likeness of Neptune and perhaps were ordered by a wealthy sea captain or merchant.
