A Rare Pair of American Rococo Laminated and Carved Rosewood Meridiennes, c. 1850-1860, by J.H. Belter, New York, the floral carved crest over a serpentine rail composed of scalloped elements containing pierced vintage carving over a conforming back and curved seat rail carved with roses on cabriole legs and scroll feet, height 33.5in. , width 37 in., depth 24 in. E20000-30000 Provenance: Purchased by Nicholas and Frances Lonsdale, c. 1850-1860, for their New Orleans home. Descended in the family to the present owner. Note: These Meridiennes, lot 509, display much of the carved ornament and design found in well-known Belter patterns including those known as Fountain Elms and Tuthill King . The exuberant carving and pierced elements are evidence of Belter's innovative virtuosity.
