Description:

A Rare Philadelphia Classical Mahogany and Gilt Bronze-Mounted Window Bench, early 19th c., rectangular paneled crest rails, channeled stiles, scrolled terminals mounted by brass bosses, gilt bronze spherules, original saddle form seat with medial stretcher, height 33 1/8 in., length 40 1/4 in., depth 17 in.

  • Literature: Reference: Miller. American Antique Furniture, p. 214-215, pl. 307 and Magazine Antiques, (July, 1976), p. 46.
  • Notes: Note: The distinctive chamfered seat rail at the stile of this bench appears to be identical to that element on a suite of Philadelphia mahogany side chairs owned by Joseph du Barry, personal physician to Joseph Bonaparte in Point Breeze, New Jersey. A suite of twelve chairs with nearly identical back, rails and legs, but having mahogany spherules instead of bronze, was advertised by Hirschl & Adler, Magazine Antiques (October 2004), p. 1.
