Description:

A Rare Set of Four American Gothic Mahogany Library Chairs, c. 1880, New York, in the manner of Herter Brothers, the caster wheels impressed The Goodrich Hard Rubber Co., each finely carved from choice mahogany, the backs articulated, the top rail with crocheted finial sided by cusps, the panels filled with foliage, urns and pendant garland, the arched seat rail conforming to top rail decor, the square legs ending in block molded feet, height 54.5in. E6000/8000 Note: A New York City origin for these chairs is based on the sophistication of design, the delicate carved elements which could only be executed by a master craftsman, and by the overall construction which features techniques employed by such well- established firms as Herter Brothers. Undoubtedly made for a client of means and taste, one could imagine them in a stately McKim, Mead and White drawing room, in a library in Newport or another one of the great Vanderbilt houses.
