Description:

A Fine Regency Gilt Bronze Four-Light Candelabrum, early 19th c., in the manner of William Bullock, scrolled branches, with rosettes, fluted standard, incurvate triangular base, volute terminals, paw feet, height 24 in Note: The candelabrum's base is often attributed to a black basalt urn in the British Museum Collection that William Bullock designed and Herculeum Pottery made c. 1805 (acc. 1992.041.1). The urn, marked "W. Bullock, PUB. July 1, 1805", bears the same spreading tripartite base centering a mask with volute terminals and paw feet. According to T. Clifford, Bullock advertised this design in his 1805 trade-sheets for his establishment as "W. Bullock, Jeweller, Silversmith and China Man, as the Museum and Bronze Figure Manufactory". Fine clocks and period lighting bearing this distinctive base have been auctioned at Bonhams and Christie's. For more information, see Clifford, "William Bullock- A Fine Fellow", Christie's International Magazine (July 1991): 14-15.
