Description:

A Set of Eight American Highly Carved Oak Dining Chairs, c. 1860, attributed to Alexander Roux, New York, each having an arched back with relief-carved fruit and nut crest centered by a cartouche, turned foliate stiles, shaped molded seat rail, trumpet-shaped legs.

  • Notes: Note: The elegant and variously composed carved fruit and nuts on the crests of these chairs are very similar to those on the stiles of a pair of oak cabinets purchased from Roux by William and Margaret Astor, c. 1856 (for Rokeby in Barrytown New York), and bearing the label of his 481 Broadway warerooms. Roux's work in this period was in a variety of styles to satisfy the increasingly cosmopolitan and diverse tastes of his customers. Items of Renaissance influence, such as the chairs seen here, most often were items for the dining room. Reference: Hauserman.
