Lot 113
Description:
A Set of Fourteen Royal Crown Derby Porcelain "America¹s Cup" Cabinet Plates, c. 1940, each decorated by W.E.J. Dean and featuring a different sailing boat, each titled en verso, with robin¹s egg blue borders and gilt gadroon rims, diameter 10 1/4 in.
- Notes: Note: The America¹s Cup was first awarded in 1851 to the U.S. schooner America, the yacht for which the internationally renowned sailing regatta match is named, and is the oldest active trophy in international sports. The America is depicted and identified on one of the plates in the present lot; interestingly, two plates are lacking identification. W.E.J. Dean was a proficient watercolorist and the leading marine artist at the Royal Crown Derby porcelain factory from the 1890s until shortly before his death in 1950.
