A Set of Nine American Coin Silver Fiddlethread Dessert Forks, Bailey & Kitchen, Philadelphia, c. 1832-1846, marked BAILEY & KITCHEN in a serrated rectangle and with pseudo hallmarks of an anchor, head and eagle, upturned handle with wavy shoulders, engraved script initials on the reverse J.B. for John Bell, Congressman, from Tennessee (1827- 1841), Speaker of the House (1834-1835), Secretary of War (1841), Senator from Tennessee (1847-1859) and Candidate for President on behalf of the Constitutional Union Party (1860), purchased from the estate of Mary Yeatman Whiteside, Maury County, TN, length 6.75in. weight 16 ozs. 3 dwts. E1500/2500 Provenance: The Estate of Mary Yeatman Whiteside, Columbia, Tennessee, descended in the family of Colonel Lucius Polk, Hamilton Place, Columbia, Tennessee. Note: The monogram JB on the obverse of these forks, purportedly for John Bell ( 1797-1869), famous Tennessee son who in 1860 ran for the Presidency on the Constitutional Party ticket, following an illustrious political career as Congressman for Tennessee (1827-1841), Speaker of the House 1834-1835), Secretary of War (1841) and Senator from Tennessee (1847- 1859). The widow of Senator Bell, who was related to the Polks by marriage, lived at Hamilton House in Columbia, Tennessee, until her death.
