A Southern Cherrywood Pier Table, attributed to Thomas Day (North Carolina, 1801-1861), with torus-molded apron, scrolled supports, paneled back, figured stretcher shelf on scroll feet, height 35 in., width 37 in., depth 20 in. E3000-5000 Note: Cabinetmaker Thomas Day ( 1801-1861) was a free man of color working in the town of Milton in Caswell County, North Carolina. Beginning in the 1820's, Day's business grew into one of the areas largest by 1850. Day's pieces are known for a mixture of Classical elements and African motifs combined with expert veneer work. The scrolled supports in this example are stylized and elongated in such a distinctive manner. Exhibited: Dusable African American Museum, (Chicago, Illinois) 1994, Maryland Historical Society, 1995; Also "Sankofa, Honoring African American Craft" traveling exhibition: Louisiana State Museum (New Orleans), 1995, and Tubman Museum (Macon, Georgia), 1996 and 2000.
