A Southern Federal Walnut and Mahogany 'Jackson Press', c. 1800, the rectangular top above crossbanded, cockbeaded drawers and gothic flame-veneered paneled doors, the sides with delicate reeding, raised on a reeded base ending in turned tapered legs, yellow pine secondary wood, height 53.5 in., width 42 in., depth 23 in. E5000-7000 Note: Derived from the traditionally larger sideboard, this Southern chest form, known as the 'Jackson Press ' was versatile in its use for dining rooms and kitchens. Most closely associated with Tennessee cabinet makers and named for local hero Andrew Jackson, the Jackson Press was common in the vicinity of Jackson's home: Davidson County, Montgomery County, and Wilson County, Tennessee.
