A Suite of Four American Gothic Mahogany Side Chairs, c. 1830, New York, each having a shaped crest rail with pierced trefoils, serpentine stiles and splats, upholstered seats, slightly curved seat rail on saber legs, height 35 1/2 in.
- Notes: Note: These chairs are very similar to a suite of four walnut side chairs in the White House and thought to be from a group commissioned by the firm J. & J.W. Meeks in 1846/7 A side chair also attributed to Meeks identical to those in this lot is in the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Reference: Howe and Warren. The Gothic Revival Style in America 1830-1870, pp. 13-44, pl. 3-4; Feld. In Pointed Style, p. 97, pl. 48a.
