A True Pair of Chinese Famille Verte Powder Blue Ground Porcelain Narrative Vases, Kanxi Period (1662-1722), each bulbous, baluster body finely painted with diamond shaped lobed panels enclosing two scenes depicting the assassination of Xie Lie by Nie Zheng, with smaller shaped lotus and iris panels between, all reserved on a powder-blue ground, approx. 8 1/4 in., now mounted as lamps with wiring glued to the exterior, not drilled.

Note: The vases offered here appear to depict scenes from the story of the famous murder of Xie Lie by Nie Zheng, the legendary assassin whose name became immortalized through the self-sacrificing efforts of his sister, Nie Rong, an Antigone-like figure. The story of Nie Zheng is recorded in the fifth chapter of Records of the Grand Historian or Shi ji, an overview of the history of China by the Imperial historian Sima Qian (about 145- 90 BCE).
