Lot 139
Description:
A Venetian Neoclassical Lacca Contrafatta, Gilt and Paint-Decorated Jewel Casket, 18th c., molded top, gold foil leaf banding, hinged door flanked by tapered Doric columns opening to a series of drawers, plinth base with harlequin geometric painted surface, later brass ball feet, the whole in chinoiserie and fanciful exotic cut-outs of birds, animals, pagodas, flowering vines and temples, height 6 3/4 in., width 11 1/2 in., depth 8 in.
- Notes: Note: The Lacca Contrafatta technique was developed by the Italians as an imitation of Asian lacquerware eliminating painstaking brushwork. Instead, cut-outs of prints or engravings were glued to the surface and coated. Reference: de Dampierre, The Best of Painted Furniture, see pgs. 50-55, 59 and glossary.
