Description:

A Very Fine American Rococo Carved Rosewood Footstool, c. 1850- 60, New York, oval frame with shell and foliate carving applied to smooth veneered surface, on molded legs with scrolled foliate carved feet, height 12 1/2in., width 19in. E1500-2500 Note: The overall effect of the present stool is quite similar to that of several Belt er forms where carved ornament is applied to a smooth background, ie: a Rosalie center table illustrated in Dubrow and Dubrow, American Furniture of the 19th Ce pg. 131; a Rosalie etagere, ibid. pg. 143; and the drawer fronts of a Belter dressing bureau, ibid. pg. 152 The carving is masterful - highly detailed and exceptionally crisp - and is consistent with the Belter firm's standard of quality. These observations may be the basis for an attribution to Belter.
