A Very Good George III Carved Mahogany and Gilt Bronze-Mounted Commode, late 18th c., in the French taste, molded serpentine top over three conforming graduated drawers, the projecting corners with caryatid mounts, beaded and scalloped apron, on hairy cloven-hoof gilt bronze feet, retaining original gilt bronze pulls and escutcheons, height 36 in., width 51 in., depth 24 in. E12000/18000 Note: Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, third edition, 1762, illustrates several designs for "French Commode Table [s]" plate LXVI particularly relates to the offered example. Chippendale's design and this commode are alike in shape of the case, both have projecting canted corners with carved scrolled foliage, and both are raised on legs of similar height in proportion to the case.
