Lot 276
A Very Rare American Rococo Carved Rosewood Window Bench, attributed to John Henry Belter, the molded serpentine skirt centered by a floral cartouche and floral cabriole legs, height 15 in., width 40 in , depth 19 in. E4000/6000 Provenance: Nashville's Belle Meade Plantation. Also exhibited at the Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art. Note: An American Rococo window bench which is attributable to Belter is most interesting. The detail of the carved foot is virtually identical to numerous examples of documented Belter seat furniture. See The Magazine Antiques, May 1981, The Manney Collection of Belter Furniture by Marvin D. Schwartz. The outline of the seat rail strongly relates to a pair of meridiennes sold in these rooms, May 1996 lat 712. The very distinctive roses centering the rail may be seen again on an armchair, April 1990 lot 677, and a corset back slipper chair, September 1990 lot 719, both sold in these sales rooms. A rare Belter footstool with the eared ornament applied to a smooth background was sold here December 1997, lot 855. This window bench helps establish another link of discovery which improves the understanding of this remarkable 19th century New York cabinetmaker.
