Description:

A Very Fine English Carved Rosewood Firescreen, mid-19th c., pierced floral carved C-scroll surround, inner gilt frame enclosing a painted velvet panel of a sultan and maid, barley twist supports, acanthus-carved arched trestle legs, scroll toes, casters, height 56 in., width 32 in., depth 19 in Roman design, incorporating insular flora in to the swags and "Green Man" masques on the skirt. Two other possible design influences for this table appear as plate IXXII "Slab Frames" in Ince and Mayhew's 1762 Universal System of Household Furniture with related swag carved aprons, knee transitions and foot proportions to those seen here.
