A Wedgwood "Portland" Vase, late 19th/early 20th c., marked WEDGWOOD, after the well-known example in the collection of the British Museum, sculpted in cameo style on a black jasperware ground, height 10.5 in. diameter 8 in. E1500-2500 Note: Josiah Wedgwood created the porcelain vase after the original Roman example. The vase was excavated near Rome in the 16th c. and was in the possession of the Barberini family until it was acquired by the Duke of Portland in the 18th c. The vase is decorated with 7 human and god-like figures, depicting the Emperor Augustus being sired by the god Apollo, en verso a scene of Hecuba dreaming of the events that would lead to the Trojan War, the base with the head of Paris.
