Description:

Abbott Fuller Graves (American, 1859-1936), "Castillo de San Marcos, St. Augustine, Florida", pastel on paper, signed lower right, sight 13 3/8 in. x 9 1/2 in., attractively matted and framed.

  • Notes: Note: Abbott Fuller Graves and his family began vacationing in Florida as early as 1910. He was an avid traveler, painting in many exotic locations such as Paris, Bermuda, and Cuba. His Florida scenes, however, are intriguing due to the subject matter. Instead of the still life, landscape, or genre scenes that Graves customarily painted in his hometown of Kennebunkport, Maine, he seems to embrace the historicism of the sights of Florida, focusing on the people observing the monuments, gardens, and other places of interest. The result of this choice of subject matter is a more spontaneous technique, which captures the figures in the midst of their activities. The scene represented here beautifully depicts three people visiting St. Augustine's fort along the Guana River, which opens into the Atlantic Ocean.
