After Giovanni Volpato (Italian, 1731-1782) 18th c., "A Pair of Architectural Panels from Raphael's Vatican Loggia Decoration for Clement XIV", hand-colored copperplate engravings, after drawings by Ludovico Tesio (Italian, 1731-1782) sight 44 in. x 18 in., framed.
- Notes: Note: One of the most acclaimed engravers of his time, Volpato was the principal artist responsible for the ambitious series of engravings based on Raphael's paintings and frescoes at the Vatican. Initially trained in the rudiments of drawing by his mother, an embroiderer, Volpato later attended Count Giovanni Antonio Remondini's (Italian, 1634-1711?) engraving workshop in Bassano. He first gained the notice of the art world while he was working in Venice for the Duke of Parma. At the suggestion of his patron, Girolamo Zulian, Volpato moved to Rome in 1771 It was in this capital city that Volpato began to excel in the art of engraving; first by working with Gavin Hamilton on the "Italian School Pictures", and later by his extensi e and highly lauded work on the Raphael series. In his later years Volpato founded a school of engraving in Rome, which was attended by many of the future generation's most respected engravers. Reference: Bénézit.
