After John Gould (English 1804-1881), A Monograph of the Ramphastidae, or Family of Toucans, by John Gould, F.L.S., London, published by the author, 20 Broad Street, Golden Square, 1834, folio, with 33 hand-colored lithographs, heightened with gum arabic, 9 by Edward Lear, 24 by John and Elizabeth Gould, one uncolored lithograph by Charles Scharf, printed by Charles Hullmandel, complete with title page, dedication page to 'Professor Temminck of Leyden..by His Obliged Friend', subscribers page, preface, introduction, addenda to introduction and synopsis specierum, in later full green morocco, finely gilt and hand-tooled, sheet size 21.25in x 14.5 in., superb condition, noting stain to one plate margin E50000-70000 Note: Coenraad Jacob Temminck (1778-1858), to whom Gould dedicated this monograph and who is also noted on the subscriber page, was a noted Dutch ornithologist His book Manuel d'Ornithologie, 1815, was the standard text on European birds He was the first Director of the Imperial Museum of Natural History, Leyden, from 1820 until his death in 1858 The preface of this monograph also mentions him as a valuable resource.
