Note: Governor John Parker was one of Louisiana's earliest and most avid conservationists. He was also a good friend, political ally and hunting partner of President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1909 Parker convinced the Louisiana Legislature to create the Louisiana Board of Commissions for the Protection of Birds, Game and Fish. In 1915 Parker and Roosevelt were escorted on an arduous five day journey to the newly established Breton Federal Bird Reservation by members of the Audubon Society. Roosevelt wrote about this journey in an autobiography, "A Book Lover's Holiday in the Open." In 1902, soon-to- be Governor John Parker, President Roosevelt, Tabasco Sauce heir John McIhenny and others went on a black bear hunt in Mississippi. It was here that Roosevelt refused to shoot a captured bear tied to a tree. The incident was picked up by the media and the Teddy Bear legend was formed.
