- Provenance: Provenance : With Pierre Oscar Ayraud, Palo Alto Plantation; Thence to his daughter, Mary Lee Ayraud (Mrs. Frederick Landry, 1867; Thence to her daughter, Mary Lee Landry (Mrs. Arthur A. Lemann), 1929; Thence to her son, Arthur A. "Bubs" Lemann, Jr. 1929; Thence by descent in the Lemann family. "According to family accounts, when Marie Adrien Persac was in the Donaldsonville area in the mid 1850s to conduct his cartographic research for the Norman's Chart, he stayed for many months as a guest of Pierre Oscar Ayraud. To show his gratitude, Persac painted the watercolor (gouache) of the Palo Alto residence for Ayraud and also presented him with an original edition of the completed map as a further token of his appreciation. Later, right after the Civil War, Jacob Lemann foreclosed on the Palo Alto plantation and residence. Needless to say, the painting and map were removed from the property by the departing and distressed Ayraud family. Then, in 1914, Jacob's grandson, Arthur Abraham Lemann, married Pierre Oscar's granddaughter, Mary Lee Landry. Thus Persac's painting and map were reunited with the Palo Alto home through the intermarriage of the Lemann and Ayraud families..." Neal Auction Company would like to thank the family patriarch for sharing this history. The Persac gouache, "Palo Alto Plantation, Ascension Parish", sold in these rooms November 20, 2010 Note: The publisher had planned to make a series of three maps showing plantations from New Orleans to Memphis, but this was the only one completed.
