Description:

Aimable Desire Lansot (French/New Orleans, 1799-1851), "Jean Baptiste Labatut (1752-1839)", oil on canvas, unsigned, 1830, 29 1/2 in. x 24 1/2 in., in a period stenciled gilt frame. Provenance: Labatut/Blanc Families, New Orleans, descended in the family of the sitter. Note: The Frenchman, Aimable Desire Lansot arrived in New Orleans in the spring of 1834 and advertised himself as a painter of portraits and miniatures. The popular French portraitist, Jean Joseph Vaudechamp, may have encouraged Lansot to come to the city. Vaudechamp's elegant neoclassical style appears to have been influential in Lansot's pendant portraits of Jean Baptiste and Marie Felicite Labatut.
