Description:
Albert Arthur Allen (American, 1886-1962), "Archery Practice; The Model, series no. 1", silver gelatin photograph, "Olympia Galleries, Ltd., Philadelphia" stamp en verso of print, "Antonio Raimo Gallery, Atlanta, Georgia" label en verso, 7 in. x 10 in., attractively matted and framed.
- Notes: Note: Allen was the scion of a wealthy New England family; his parents¹ financial support allowed him the freedom to pursue an art which, while popular among the intellectuals and art connoisseurs of the Jazz age, was not profitable. Allen¹s non-historicizing approach to the depiction of the nude female figure exposed him to censure, litigation, and prosecution on obscenity charges. Undeterred and unfazed by the general public¹s concern regarding the validity of his work, he continued to create images that reflected his then somewhat shocking views of female beauty. According to Allen, "Šthe true nude gives a version of beauty, both physical and spiritual-two great needs of humanity." Reference: Bowman, "Roaring Œ20s Women". June 14, 2001. Salon.com
