Lot 119
Description:
Alexander Helwig Wyant (American/New York, 1836-1892), "Out to Pasture", oil on canvas, signed and dated "1875" lower right, 18 in. x 30 1/8 in., in the original cove-molded giltwood frame.
- Notes: Note: Alexander Wyant, born in 1836 in Ohio, left home for New York at the age of twenty to meet painter George Inness (1825-1894), whose paintings he had always admired. Exhibiting at such fine institutions as the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Wyant's works demonstrated a range of subject matter and techniques, from the more naturalistic Hudson River School style to the atmospheric Tonalist qualities in his works. Both of these qualities are depicted in the lot illustrated here, in the earthy mountains and hills of the fore and middle grounds and the hazy background.
