Alexandre Cabanel (French, 1823-1889), The Storyteller, oil on canvas signed and dated ‘1883' lower left, 22 in. x 33 in., Maison Boucard, Paris label en verso, in a period giltwood frame. E25000-40000 Provenance: Estate of Mrs. William Burgess Eppler, New York-Dallas, Texas. Note: Cabanel trained in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and was well-known as a teacher and painter of classical academic themes. A rival of Bouguereau, he achieved widespread fame with his 1862 painting The Birth of Venus, and garnered many important commissions for nobility thereafter. This later work is an excellent representation of his contribution to the Belle Epoque depictions of French painting.
