"Woman Reading Letter, Small Black Boy looks On", pencil, wash, white/brown/black ink on paper, inscribed "a young rebels letter to Jane reads: We will lick the yanks to morrer if `godolemity' spares our lives.", sheet size: 8 15/16 in. x 5 9/16 in., unframed, good condition. NOTE Documented in Alfred Jacob Miller: Artist on the Oregon Trail, Amon Carter Museum, Ft. Worth Texas, 1982, the catalog raisonne, as 888-47. PROVENANCE Miller made many of these sketches throughout his life for the amusement of his family. The Miller family kept them for nearly 150 years, before selling some privately in the 1980's. This sketch is from the Civil War period while Miller was in Baltimore.
