Description:

Alice Latimer Moseley (American/Mississippi, 1909-2004), "The Old Witch Dropped a Stitch", 1978, oil on wood, signed lower right, signed, titled and dated en verso, 11 in. x 15 in., framed Note: Alice Moseley (1909-2004) was a self-taught "idyllic folk artist" who began painting at the age of 60. For many years she had a log cabin studio at Plum Point Retreat near Batesville in northern Mississippi. Her work is based upon her memories and a lifetime of images of a folk past, rendered with brilliant color and simplistic detail. Her sometimes humurous titles convey her imagination in painting these scenes from her past. Moseley exhibited extensively and won numerous awards during her lifetime. In her later years, she moved to Bay St. Louis where her studio currently exists as the Alice Moseley Museum. The works offered here are from a private collection and were acquired directly from the artist over many years. The collectors and "Miss Alice" were great friends and enjoyed a delightful correspondence.
