  • Notes: Note: After retiring from a nursing career that lasted twenty-five years, Alice Taylor Gafford pursued her interest in painting at the Otis Art Institute. She later taught art in the adult education program of the Los Angeles public schools. An active participant in the art groups of Southern California, Gafford founded the Val Verde Art and Hobby Show which was re-named in her honor. A member of the burgeoning African-American Regional art movement, she became particularly well-known for her still lifes, such as this charming view of "Nine Calla Lilies."
