Description:

American Carved Walnut Meridienne, mid-19th c., eagle carved crest, scrolled armrest, carved apron, scrolled feet, casters, h. 45 in., w. 63 1/2 in., d. 28 1/2 in. Note: The overall form and carved ornament of this méridienne reflect the style popular of the mid-19th century. The use of walnut instead of mahogany and the inclusion of a shielded American eagle mounted to the crest are interesting in that they might suggest this piece was made around the time of the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia.
