American Cherrywood Hanging Corner Cupboard, late 19th c., in the style of Charles Eastlake, scalloped back, spindled gallery, chamfered door with beveled glass, h. 36 in., w. 17 in., d. 12 in. Note: In the second half of the 19th century, American cabinetmakers were influenced by the ideas of British architect Charles Eastlake and his book Hints on Household Tastes: The Classic Handbook of Victorian Interior and Decoration originally published in 1878. Characteristics of the Eastlake style included low relief carvings, incised lines, geometric ornament, and flat surfaces, some of which are seen in the present lot.
