Description:

American Classical Mahogany Armoire, c. 1820, probably Louisiana, cove-molded cornice, Santo Domingo mahogany paneled doors with pressed brass escutcheons, fiche hinges, interior belt of drawers, shelves, reeded legs, brass ball feet, mahogany, poplar and pine secondary wood, h. 91 in., w. 60 in., d. 21 in. Provenance: Houmas House Plantation, Burnside, LA; Neal Auction Company, April 5, 2003, lot 258, and Sept. 12, 2015, lot 331. Note: The proportions, use of finely figured veneers, poplar and pine secondary woods, fiche hinges, pressed brass escutcheons, restrained plinth with finely reeded legs and brass ball feet on this armoire are very similar to an armoire in the collection of Michael Hopping and an armoire from the collection of Lita D. Lide, sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 322, June 27, 2015. Interestingly the armoire offered here has a plain center stile and no side cabinet, unlike the aforementioned examples.
