Description:

A Rare Pair of American Classical Mahogany Klismos Chairs, early 19th c., Philadelphia, each with tablet crest, trapezoidal seat, saber legs Note: The extended crest rail and the serpentine back supports on these chairs are typical of sophisticated Philadelphia examples of the early 19th-century, and adhere closely to ancient Greek prototypes. Other noted examples of Philadelpha klismos chairs similar to those seen here are conserved at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Winterthur and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Reference: Boor. Allison.
